The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed his "regret" at the death of Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, "a prominent figure in Portuguese architectural modernism".
"After completing his studies at ESBAL, Costa Cabral worked in the studio of Nuno Teotónio Pereira, with whom he designed, in the 1950s, the Bloco das Águas Livres, an iconic building in the city of Lisbon, and an example of a certain idea of an open city", began by recalling the Presidency of the Republic in a note published on its official website.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted "the numerous buildings linked to education, from primary schools to universities, in Lisbon, Sintra, Tomar, Covilhã or Guimarães, as well as social housing, in collaboration with Teotónio Pereira and Nuno Portas".
"His peers praised his concern with the notion of the city, not as a watertight unit, which perhaps explains why a commemorative exhibition, in 2019, chose as its title the beautiful expression 'the ethics of things'", continued the Presidency, recalling that Costa Cabral received from the President of the Republic the insignia of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, in 2022.
