Telma Monteiro returns on the "most beautiful day" and with a desire to make history

"I'll be back competing on April 25th at the European Championship. It couldn't be on a more beautiful day. From there, I'll keep competing for the next month, in qualifying events for #paris2024, my sixth Olympic Games, and thus try to make history!", the judoka wrote on her Instagram account.

Telma Monteiro's last competition was in November, also at the Europeans, in Montpellier, where the judoka was forced to give up in the first fight, after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of her left knee, which required surgery.

"It was five months of a lot of struggle, a lot of work, extreme dedication, tears, pain and sweat, to be able to return to competition, as best as possible in time to complete my goal. Since the first day, I felt and I knew, we knew, the challenge that lay ahead. It was hard. But the moment has come!", she also said.

The judoka, the most medaled ever in Portuguese judo and the female record holder for medals in Europeans, with 15 (six gold, two silver and seven bronze), is now looking for points that confirm a sixth presence at the Olympic Games.

With the absence of competition, Telma Monteiro fell out of the direct qualification zone in -57 kg, reserved for the 17 best ranked in the ranking, with the exception of the judoka from the host country and the repetition of nationalities.

Even so, she remains in a virtually eligible place, in quota reallocation, remaining quota places for judokas with the highest number of points, at a time when she is about 150 points away from the last place that qualifies via ranking.

With her return in Zagreb, the judoka, bronze medalist at the Rio2016 Olympic Games, will once again fight for points that will allow her to move up the hierarchy, when there are three more scoring events left until May, the Tajikistan and Kazakhstan Grand Slams, and the Abu Dhabi World Championships.

If she qualifies, Telma Monteiro will once again make history, now becoming the Portuguese female athlete with the most participations in the Games, after having been in Athens2004, Beijing2008, London2012, Rio2016 and Tokyo2020.
