The Portuguese fighter battled until the 'golden score', a period after the initial four minutes and when there is a tie between the judokas, but he received a third 'shido' (penalty) 45 seconds into the extra period and was disqualified (hansoku-make).

In the fight, against an opponent he had never fought before, Fonseca, who won a bronze medal in Tokyo2020, in the Games held in 2021, and was two-time world champion in 2019 and 2021, was never able to perform effective holds.

The Sporting judoka, who was seventh seed in the Europeans and is in the virtual qualifying zone for the Paris2024 Games, did not have the explosive strength that is so characteristic of him in the fight against Pirellli.

Without major imbalances on either side, Fonseca can, however, complain of some injustice, with the referee penalising the Portuguese, but only giving a first penalty to Pirelli, who had some situations of apparent false attacks.

Before the competition taking place in Zagreb, the men's coach and also coach at Sporting, Pedro Soares, had admitted that the continental competition was not a priority, in the year of the Olympic Games, although it was important in terms of points.

"Perhaps it is even more important [to be seeded in Paris2024] than to have a good result now [in the Europeans], although the two things are connected, because if he wins a medal in a World Championship, he will be seeded, won't he?", the coach told the Lusa agency at the time.

Jorge Fonseca is in 10th place in the Olympic qualification in -100 kg, with the first eight classified being seeded in the Games, a condition that Pedro Soares classified as very important for the judoka to fight for a medal.

After the Europeans, the judoka is still expected to compete in the Tajikistan Grand Slam (03 to 05) and the Abu Dhabi World Championships (19 to 23) in May.

Portugal, which entered the Europeans with 15 judokas and won a bronze medal by Catarina Costa (-48 kg), on the first day, on Thursday, will still have the Olympic judokas Patrícia Sampaio (-78 kg) and Rochele Nunes (+78 kg) closing the participation today.
