Gary Neville has warned of the dangers of Chelsea's project after they handed Enzo Fernandez, the former Benfica player, a contract until June 2031, when he will be 31.
The Argentina international is now on around £180,000 a week, something the former Manchester United captain believes could be damaging to both parties as players can become "mesmerised" by the trappings of wealth.
"They need good, experienced players, they can't keep signing players on eight-year contracts. Eight-year contracts are wrong on so many levels, I can't see the sense in it," he said on Sky Sports.
"It's not good for a young player, actually. The money side of it is ridiculous really, you'd like to think the club think they've got a 21, 22-year-old who they're going to secure, but the player is thinking 'I'm rich, I'm minted'.
"For some, that's a problem, it affects your mentality. What's your motivation? For yourself and your family, you hope that's your motivation. For your team-mates and the manager, you hope it's to do the right thing."
