The presidents of Rebordosa Atlético Clube and União de Paredes today contested the three-month break in the Portuguese Football Championship for the majority of the participating clubs, considering it to be "a third world thing".

The leader of Rebordosa, fifth placed in Series B, sponsored the harshest terms and justified the opinion that "Campeonato de Portugal (CP) is in mourning" with the experience of 26 years in the club's presidency.

"It is unacceptable to stay so long without competing, especially because the commitments continue to exist and must be fulfilled, but the revenues go down. We cannot force sponsors to pay for a disclosure that cannot be done or the members to pay more time without football. This can leave many clubs in a very complicated situation", said today Joaquim Barbosa, in statements to the Lusa agency.

The president of Rebordosa sympathizes with the concern revealed by the Porto Football Association, although he understands that this alone is not enough, arguing that "all the presidents of the CP clubs should join together and take a joint position", so as not to allow "something at the level of the third world" to continue.

Of the 56 participating clubs in the Campeonato de Portugal, only eight, concerning the first two of the four existing series, continue in the competition. For the majority of the others, the championship ended in early April, approximately three months before the return to work.

"I am very apprehensive", he confessed, fearing that the players will try to keep fit in gyms or competing in recreational activities, even in other sports, increasing the potential for injuries, which then harm each other.

The president of União de Paredes, for whom permanence was only ensured on the last day, joins the protests and contested, above all, "the competitive model", considering that "it does not benefit clubs, players and coaches" and "worsens the difficulties of raising support".

"There are months with only two games and, in 14 teams, five go down. Maybe, instead of the four series, they would only make three, but with more teams and games to play", defended Pedro Silva, in statements to Lusa.

For the Paredes leader, "the clubs have to be supportive to have a say", anticipating difficulties even when hiring players.

"Even if the project presented is enticing, the players will always be on the back foot, because, if the club fails to reach the final phase, they will play less, have fewer chances to show themselves and, perhaps, earn less", he stressed, insisting on the idea that "it is never too late to change what is wrong".
