In a statement released today, Zero states that it is frontally against an increase in the capacity of Humberto Delgado airport, announced by the Government, because it will result in an increase in aircraft movement, noise, air pollution, and risk of air accidents in the city of Lisbon.
The association emphasizes that the increase in capacity of Lisbon airport, which was not foreseen in the recommendations of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI) on the new airport, goes much further by proposing an increase in airport capacity from 38 movements per hour to 45, "which would worsen the scourge to which many citizens of Lisbon are daily, day and night, exposed due to the intense overflight of aircraft in the city",
"What is required of all responsible actors is that they commit and make every effort to materialize, in the shortest possible time, a credible environmental licensing process and the construction of the new airport infrastructure that will allow the deactivation of the current Lisbon airport", it adds.
ZERO also denounces "what it considers to be an attempt to avoid the need for an Environmental Impact Assessment for the airport expansion, by announcing an increase in its capacity by 18.4%, a value below 20% which, according to the legislation, triggers the need to comply with this instrument".
However, the association argues that "the need for an Environmental Impact Assessment of any work at Humberto Delgado is absolutely unequivocal, regardless of the value of the capacity increase or even if there is one - in addition to the fact that it would be a lack of transparency towards the citizens of Lisbon not to carry it out".
The association also states that it considers the Government's announcement to increase the airport's capacity to be rushed because due to the "scale of the damages involved, ZERO believes that any request for a capacity increase license will be rejected by the environmental authorities".
