The motion was approved during a plenary session held at the Lisbon City Council, one day after the end of a three-day partial strike by EMEL workers, to demand salary improvements and the fulfillment of commitments made in 2023.
According to Orlando Gonçalves, from the Union of Commerce, Office and Service Workers of Portugal (CESP), who spoke to the Lusa agency, the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas (PSD), addressed the plenary session to speak to the workers and guarantee that he would appeal for the resumption of negotiations with the board of directors.
In the motion, EMEL workers state that the current board of directors "does not have the trust of the workers and has shown that it is not qualified to continue in office".
In the document, the workers also admit to moving forward with new forms of struggle, if the discussion on the list of demands is not resumed.
The partial strike was called by the Union of Commerce, Office and Service Workers of Portugal (CESP) and took place between Tuesday and Thursday, with two-hour stoppages per shift.
During the three days, the stoppage had "massive adherence by the workers", with several services closed, according to the union.
The strike was called because EMEL workers, a company wholly owned by the Lisbon City Council, want the administration to "fulfil the commitments made in 2023 and that have not been implemented".
In addition to salary improvements, the implementation of overtime pay is one of the issues that most concerns EMEL workers.
Lusa contacted the EMEL administration, but has not yet received a response.
In a note sent to Lusa on Monday, EMEL assured that it maintains the commitments made in the Company Agreement and the commitment to dialogue with workers.
"The board of directors remains committed to social dialogue with the workers' representative structures, contributing to a sustainable and harmonious balance of the company, reinforcing the labour rights of its employees, and maintaining the commitments made in the current company agreement", read the note from EMEL.
EMEL has around 700 workers.
