Do you have a porcelain sink in your kitchen? To avoid some very expensive damage, the experts at Better Homes and Gardens advise against using harsh products, such as ammonia, and instead suggest trying different strategies.

Need some help? First, gather your materials (and ingredients), which include a soft sponge; paper towels; a microfiber cloth; a spray bottle; dish soap; white vinegar; baking soda; salt; and lemon juice.

Ready to get started? Rinse the sink with water. Wipe it down with the damp sponge, making sure to get rid of any debris. Then, squirt a few drops of dish soap into the sink and run the water to create suds, they advise. Use the sponge to wipe everything down. Dish soap cuts through grease without being too harsh, they explain.

Examine the sink and look for areas that need extra attention. You can treat stains by sprinkling baking soda over them. Combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray it on top of the baking soda to create a paste. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

Use paper towels to buff the surface of the sink and remove the stains. This mixture can also remove rust stains. When you’re done, rinse the sink again with water. Then, using a clean cloth or paper towels, wipe away any remaining cleaning solution. Use a microfiber cloth to dry the sink.
