The Philippine military said the incident occurred Monday in the southern province of Maguindanao del Sur on the island of Mindanao, a haven for various armed groups, from communist insurgents to Islamic State-linked rebels, according to a statement.
Brig. Gen. Jose Vladimir Cagara said the slain leader of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters-Karialan Faction (BIFF), Mohiden Animbang, also known as Karialan, was killed along with his brother, Saga Animbang, and 10 members of the IS-linked group.
The operation also led to the seizure of 12 high-powered firearms, including five M16 assault rifles.
"This group has been long notorious for bombings, attacks on Army and police detachments and extortion activities against bus companies," regional army spokesman Lt. Col. Dennis Almorato told The Associated Press.
The southern Philippines has been plagued by decades of violence by separatist and extremist rebel groups, including those that have declared allegiance to the IS.
In 2014, Manila signed a peace deal with the country’s largest rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, ending decades of armed conflict.
But the region remains a base for smaller groups of Islamic militants and communist rebels who oppose the peace deal, including the BIFF, which broke away from the Moro front.
