The protest, at one of France’s most prestigious universities, involved the blocking of the street outside the building and began in the morning, in line with several other student protests against what students have described as “genocide”.

Officers removed about 200 students who had sat down on Rue Saint Guillaume, at the entrance to the institute which educates a large proportion of France’s ruling elite.

The institute’s 50 occupants also left without incident, cheered by fellow students, after a student delegation reached an agreement with the institution’s provisional administrator, according to the newspaper Le Parisien.

There were tense moments in the afternoon when a small group of people demonstrated opposite the student protest, waving Israeli flags and displaying pictures of some of the hostages held by Hamas in its attacks on 7th October, which triggered the current Israeli military offensive in Gaza.

However, the confrontation remained verbal, with the student protest otherwise passing off peacefully.

The pro-Palestinian protest came two days after police broke up another demonstration, of more than 100 students, in the university’s amphitheatre outside one of its Paris campuses.
