The attack, with an Iskander missile loaded with cluster munitions, hit the vicinity of the building known as 'Harry Potter's castle' on Monday.

In addition to setting fire to the castle, located in the tourist district of Arcadia in this port city in southwestern Ukraine, and belonging to a university foundation, the explosions of cluster munitions damaged other buildings in the area.

"The attack was carried out with an Iskander ballistic missile with cluster munitions in the warhead. It is an indiscriminate weapon," reads a statement from the Ukrainian Public Prosecutor's Office, which adds that fragments of metal and parts of the missile were found within a radius of 1.5 kilometers.

The Public Prosecutor's Office adds that "there is reason to believe that the decision to use this weapon" in the Russian attack was aimed at "killing as many Ukrainian civilians as possible".

Along with the statement, the prosecutor's office distributed a video showing the explosions of the multiple submunitions or bomb fragments that give cluster munitions their name.

Cluster munitions are often used to destroy multiple targets located at some distance from each other. This type of ammunition is normally used to hit formations of tanks or infantry and damage or shoot down the largest number of armored vehicles or fighters spread over a given area.

According to Odessa military expert Alexander Kovalenko, this is the first time that Russia has used cluster munitions against the city.

"The idea of this type of munition is to hit a vast area, which is what happened yesterday [Monday] in Odessa, except that the attack was not aimed at military targets but at civilians," Kovalenko wrote on his social networks.

The expert said there were no military targets in the area.

Russia has been relentlessly attacking Ukrainian cities for months and advancing on the eastern front of Ukraine, which is still awaiting the arrival of the weapons promised by the United States.
