"The EU supports the protection of the independence of the ICC and the integrity of the Rome Statute. Threats against the court and its officials are unacceptable," EU External Action Service spokesperson Peter Stano said in a message posted on social media platform X.
The ICC has denounced attempts to "interfere, obstruct, intimidate or otherwise improperly influence" the work of its officials and called for an end to threats that could compromise the court's "impartiality and independence".
The court made the statement without referring directly to Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be the target of an international arrest warrant as part of an ICC investigation into possible war crimes in the Gaza Strip, according to US and Israeli media.
Netanyahu has denounced an alleged attempt by the ICC to prevent Israelis from exercising their "legitimate right to self-defence" and called it a "historic outrage" that the ICC could move against Israeli politicians and military leaders over the Gaza killings.
