The organization requested that President Joe Biden's Executive Branch guarantee the rights to academic freedom, freedom of expression, and peaceful assembly.
"Occupying buildings, be they public or private, is a legitimate form of protest. Any restrictions on these demonstrations should be exceptional, necessary, and proportional, considering in each case the interaction between the right to peaceful assembly and the protection of other rights, such as private property," stated the IACHR in a press release.
In the text, the organization emphasized that protests at academic institutions represent a platform for students to express their criticisms, demands, and claims.
Their appeal to Joe Biden aims to promote a dialogue that considers the concerns of the students, who have set up encampments at various universities against Washington's support for Israel and the ties of university centers to companies that profit from war.
Freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly are "fundamental in democratic societies," concluded the IACHR, which is an autonomous organ of the Organization of American States and has the mandate to promote human rights in the region.
