An official from the recruitment team in the region of Rangoon, the country's former capital, stated, as quoted by the Europa Press news agency, that almost 300 people have already signed up in that city alone, who will now undergo training.

"We are already recruiting in Rangoon. So far, we have 294 people," he stated.

The military junta created recruitment teams in all seven Burmese regions after announcing, about two months ago, the start of a forced mobilisation, an operation that became more important as the military faced an alliance of rebel groups that are trying to fight the junta's troops in several areas of the country.

Human rights organisations warned that many civilians were abducted from their own homes during the first round of recruitment.

Many families tried to negotiate with the junta so that their sons and daughters would not be included on the list, but the monetary amounts demanded are almost impossible to reach.

Most recruits are under 45 years old, and in the case of women, only those under 35 are enlisted.

It is estimated that the military junta may incorporate between 200 to 300 people per region, which would mean between 1,400 to 2,100 recruits nationwide in this second round.

Last week, the military junta announced the suspension of the issuing of permits for men to work abroad, following the flight of thousands of people from the country after the imposition of military service of at least two years was announced.

Myanmar has been immersed in conflict since the coup d'état in 2021, with the military junta weakened by the army's defeats against pro-democracy guerrillas and ethnic minorities.
