Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's memoir will be published on November 26 and will run to 700 pages, publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch announced on Monday.

The book, entitled 'Freedom. Memories 1954 - 2021', will be released in more than 30 countries, the publisher added, as cited by German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW).

Almost three years after the end of her 16-year term in office, Angela Merkel looks back on her "life in two German states - 35 years in East Germany, 35 years in reunified Germany".

Merkel was born in Hamburg, northwestern Germany, on July 17, 1954, but moved with her family to the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) a short time later, DW recalls.

"What is freedom to me? This question has haunted me all my life," the former chancellor said in a statement after the announcement of the book, which was written with the collaboration of Beate Baumann, her chief of staff and political adviser.

"Without democracy there is no freedom, no constitutional state, no protection of human rights," she added.

Merkel also stressed that freedom means "not stopping learning, not having to stand still, not being able to go further, even after leaving politics".

Angela Merkel was considered the most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine for more than 10 consecutive years. She was Chancellor of Germany, Europe's largest economy, from 2005 to 2021, when she was succeeded by Olaf Scholz.
