The disaster also left 37 injured and led to the evacuation of 3,396 people, according to the spokesman for the Indonesian disaster management agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari.
A previous assessment by the emergency services reported 41 dead.
The floods hit the districts of Agam and Tanah Datar, in the west of the island, at around 10:30 pm (2:30 pm, in Lisbon) on Saturday.
For hours, torrential rains fell in the region, causing flash floods and cold lava flows from Mount Merapi, a volcano in the province of West Sumatra.
Cold lava is the mass formed from the various materials that make up the walls of a volcano: ash, sand and rocks. Under the effect of rain, these materials can mix and run down the crater.
Nine of the fatalities have already been identified, including two children aged three and eight, said the head of the Indonesian search and rescue agency Basarnas, Abdul Malik, in a statement.
Landslides and floods are common in Indonesia during the rainy season.
In March, at least 26 people were found dead following landslides and floods in western Sumatra.
