"The Secretary-General’s thoughts are with the [Slovak] Prime Minister and his loved ones at this difficult time,” said Farhan Haq, a spokesman for the UN chief.

Robert Fico is “between life and death”, according to the government in Bratislava, after he was shot and wounded on Thursday, his official Facebook page said, adding that the “next hours will be decisive”

Slovak television station TA3 reported that the 59-year-old Slovak leader was shot four times in the stomach outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova, about 150 kilometres northeast of the capital.

Police have cordoned off the area and a suspect has been detained.

Fico was airlifted to a hospital in Banska Bystrica, 29 kilometres away.
