Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has called the host of a local radio show in Flanders who incited an attack against him like the one against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"He understood that he had endangered me, but also my wife and children, and he apologized," De Croo told the newspaper Sudinfo, quoted by the Spanish agency EFE.
The journalist, from the Waregem station, was immediately suspended after joking on the air about the assassination attempt on Robert Fico and the possibility of something similar happening in Belgium. "It seems the man is going to survive," the presenter said about Fico.
"The culprit has already been arrested. To all those who are thinking of killing Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, but do not dare because of the security that surrounds him: You see that it is possible. I would say 'go for it'", he added.
De Croo filed a complaint, but also called the broadcaster. "I called him yesterday [Thursday] on my own initiative. He understands that he crossed the line", said the Belgian head of government, who considered freedom of expression sacred, but that "incitement to violence is punishable".
Robert Fico was shot several times on Wednesday as he left a government meeting in the city of Handlová by a 71-year-old man who justified the attack by saying he did not like the government's policies.
Although Fico, 59, remains in serious condition, he is stable, conscious and able to communicate, Slovak President-elect Peter Pellegrini said today.
