British authorities are investigating the death of an Essex holidaymaker who died at a hotel in Tavira, Algarve, while on holiday with his wife last month.

According to Essex Live, Christopher Rayner, 70, was found unresponsive at the hotel where he was staying with his wife on April 23, but the cause of his death is still unknown.

An inquest into his death was opened at Essex Coroners' Court on Tuesday.

The court heard how an Essex coroner was unable to give a provisional cause of death for the British man as she is still waiting for the results of post-mortem tests carried out by the Portuguese authorities.

"[Christopher Rayner] died in Tavira, Portugal. And the body was repatriated from Portugal to Essex. He was found unresponsive in Portugal by his wife at the hotel where they were staying. It is likely to be some time before we know the cause of his death, it is in the hands of the Portuguese authorities," Michelle Brown said.
