Shortly after the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store announced that the country will recognize the State of Palestine, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris followed suit.

"The offensive will only perpetuate hatred. We are obliged to do everything in our power to say loud and clear that we will not allow the possibility of two states being destroyed. I would like to inform you that, after having reached a consensus decision in the coalition, we will approve the recognition of Palestine on May 28," said Sánchez at a press conference, quoted by ABC España.

According to the Spanish Prime Minister, "the land and the identity of Palestine will continue to exist". "We have to recognize the Palestinian state bilaterally. It is time to act and tell them that we are with them. No matter how many villages are bombed, the land and the identity of Palestine will continue to exist," he added.

Then, the Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris made the announcement at a press conference in Dublin, quoted by Reuters: "Today, Ireland, Norway and Spain announce that we recognise the state of Palestine."

Harris also stressed that he expects "other countries to join Ireland, Spain and Norway in recognising the state of Palestine in the coming weeks". "We will each now take the necessary domestic steps to give effect to this decision. I am confident that more countries will join us in taking this important step in the coming weeks," he said.

The Prime Ministers of four European Union countries (Ireland, Slovenia and Malta) released a statement in March committing to recognizing the State of Palestine.

In April, Sánchez made a European tour to try to get more countries to recognize Palestine, which also included Belgium and a non-EU member state, Norway.

Within the EU, nine member states already recognize Palestine: Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania and Slovakia took the step in 1988, before joining the European bloc, while Sweden did so alone in 2014, fulfilling an electoral promise by the Social Democrats then in power.

In the United Nations, about 137 of the organization's 193 members have already unilaterally recognized the State of Palestine, according to the Palestinian Authority.
