The cross atop the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, which survived the devastating 2019 fire, has been put back in place after a painstaking restoration.

The cross, which stands 12 meters tall and weighs 1.5 tons, is the only element of the cathedral’s roof that withstood the blaze, according to the Associated Press . Some 250 companies and hundreds of craftspeople, architects and laborers contributed to Notre-Dame’s restoration, which is set to reopen on Dec. 8 of this year.

The fire at the UNESCO World Heritage site, which typically welcomes 12 million visitors each year, shocked the world on April 15, 2019. The flames engulfed the building’s wooden frame and spire.

About half an hour after the blaze began, Notre-Dame’s spire collapsed.

Notre-Dame Cathedral was first built in 1163 and began serving religious functions in 1182, though construction continued until 1345.
