Mexico’s national meteorological service announced on social media that the country’s capital hit 37.4 degrees Celsius (99.3 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, the fourth record high set in the past five weeks.
The service had forecast on Thursday that a third heat wave to hit Mexico this year could bring temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in 25 of the country’s 32 states, including 16 topping 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).
Researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico warned on Wednesday that the country was likely to see its highest temperatures ever recorded over the following two weeks.
The third heat wave comes just days after the second, which ran from May 3 to 13 and set temperature records in 10 cities, including the capital, and was blamed for at least 14 deaths.
The government forecast on April 16 that the country would be hit by at least five extreme heat waves between March and July.
Also on Saturday, the Texas border towns of Brownsville and Harlingen set all-time record highs for May 25, reaching 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), respectively.
The U.S. National Weather Service warned on social media that temperatures could reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) in parts of the state, and compared the setup to “a pile of dry tinder ready to burn,” with the potential for severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and tornadoes.
The United States has already recorded 859 tornadoes this year, a 25% increase over the yearly average, as climate change fuels more extreme weather around the world.
Texas is on the northern edge of a heat dome that currently stretches from Mexico into the southern United States, said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the U.S. National Weather Service.
Extreme fire weather warnings were also in effect across West Texas, all of New Mexico and parts of Oklahoma, Arizona and Colorado due to very low humidity, below 10%, and strong winds gusting up to 60 mph (97 kph).
“We have very dry air, hot temperatures and strong winds, which is leading to a very dangerous fire weather setup across a large area ... where fires could spread rapidly and become uncontrollable,” Taylor said.
