In a note sent to the Lusa agency, the Independent Union of All United Nurses (SITEU) explained that the strike was "called off following the availability of the Minister of Health to start negotiations".

The strike was scheduled for April 26, 29 and 30 and May 2 and 3 and covered public service institutions and those in the social and private sectors of the mainland and the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, regionally according to the days.

The reason given for the stoppage was the revision of salaries and careers and the hiring of more professionals, and the strike also served for nurses to demand the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements in the private and social sectors, defining salary tables never lower than those practiced in the National Health Service.

Nurses also call for a "fair, transparent and feasible" evaluation and performance model, measures that recognize and minimize risk, as well as the wear and tear of the profession and the integration of nurses with precarious contracts into public, private and social services.

The strike had been called by the National Union of Nurses (SNE), the Union of Nurses (SE), the Independent Union of Nursing Professionals (SIPENF), the Independent Union of All United Nurses (SITEU) and the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (SINDEPOR).

The last nurses' strike took place on March 15, called by the Union of Portuguese Nurses (SEP).
