"Unable to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations of April 25th in Lisbon, the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil honored this event with his presence at a dinner at the official residence of the Portuguese Ambassador in Brasília. A gesture that I appreciate and that also marks this important date in the Lusophone community in Brazil", wrote Luís Montenegro on social media X (formerly Twitter).

On April 11th, in statements to Lusa, official Brazilian sources indicated that the Brazilian President would not be present in Portugal for the 50th anniversary celebrations of April 25th, later adding that Lula da Silva would participate in a commemorative dinner for the date at the official residence of the Portuguese Embassy in Brasília.

The President of Brazil was present at the Assembly of the Republic on April 25th of last year, which generated controversy.

In February 2023, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, during a trip to Brasília, announced that Lula da Silva would speak at the solemn session of the 49th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution celebration.

However, after criticism from several Portuguese parliamentary benches, the Head of State ended up not speaking or being present at the solemn session of April 25th.

Instead, a welcome session for Lula da Silva was held on the same day at the Assembly of the Republic, which preceded the solemn session of April 25th and was marked by a protest by the Chega party during the speech of the Brazilian President.

Lula da Silva downplayed the protest, considering that "people when they don't have something good to show up" make "this ridiculous scene", a "flop".

This year, the Heads of State of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), and of Timor-Leste participated in Lisbon in a session commemorating April 25th.
