On Saturday, the Presidency of the Republic released images of the inauguration of the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom at the Peniche Fortress, whose official ceremony was presided over by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

"On the day that marks the 50th anniversary of the liberation of political prisoners from Peniche and as part of the commemorations of the 50 years of April 25th, the President of the Republic presided over the official inauguration ceremony of the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom at the Peniche Fortress, in the presence of former political prisoners and their families", reads a note published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.

"After the ceremony and after a guided tour of the exhibition 'Resistance and Freedom', passing through the new museum space in the High Security Cells corridor, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa joined the popular parade that marks the date every year", he adds.

It should be noted that, during the dictatorship, the Peniche Fortress functioned as a political prison, from which, with the April 25, 1974, the respective prisoners were released two days later.

The National Museum of Resistance and Freedom was born from the recognition of this place as a space of memory and a symbol of the struggle for freedom on a national scale.

The project's mission is to investigate, preserve and communicate the national memory related to the resistance to the Portuguese fascist regime, based on the memories and experiences of those who fought for freedom and democracy.

The museum represents an investment of 4.3 million euros, co-financed by community funds, and involved works that led to the closure of the Fortress in February 2022.
