In a statement, the ERC argues that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools used by the media must comply with transparency requirements for the public.
For the ERC, "media outlets that use AI must follow codes of good practices and make it explicit to the public whether these systems are used only as adjuvants in tasks or if they replace journalistic work in the production of content".
The ERC's position comes after the assessment of an exhibition forwarded by the National Elections Commission (CNE) regarding the "Pulsómetro" section included in the "Decisão 24" program of CNN Portugal.
In its deliberation, the ERC stated "the need for the CNN Portugal program service to prepare and publish a charter of principles on the use of Artificial Intelligence in its newsroom, if it continues to produce content for journalistic information programs using AI tools".
"This measure aims to guarantee the integrity of both the content resulting from this technology and the prerogatives inherent to journalistic activity, and to make transparent to viewers the type of tasks that are performed by these systems -- editorial and/or non-editorial", it details.
The ERC recalled the 10 general principles of the Paris Charter on Journalism and AI, which should guide the use of AI tools in journalistic practice.
