"The situation is regrettable. It's dramatic. But we are all doing everything we can to minimize the damage", declared José Manuel Bolieiro in the special broadcast by RTP/Açores dedicated to the fire that broke out in the Hospital Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada.
The fire in what is the largest health unit in the Azores forced the transfer of ventilated patients to a private health unit and the closure of the emergency room, according to a hospital source who spoke to the Lusa agency.
The president of the executive of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) confirmed that the fire originated in an electrical panel and warned of the need to renew the equipment of the Regional Health Service (SRS).
"We need to understand in the political domain the importance of looking at the situation over all these years of our equipment and facilities in order to have a robust investment to rehabilitate and innovate, in addition to mobilizing and expanding health facilities throughout the SRS", he stressed.
And he added: "It is urgent. We do not have the means available. I will also not fail to alert the Government of the Republic and the Prime Minister to this urgent need".
José Manuel Bolieiro left a word of "gratitude and pride" to all health professionals who "activated the means with maximum readiness" and assured that "everything is being taken care of" to ensure "a return to normality".
The regional leader admitted the chartering of an airplane in case it is necessary to move patients and thanked the work of all the professionals involved in fighting the flames.
Earlier, the Secretary of Health, at a press conference in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, explained that the fire compromised "the supply of energy to the Hospital" and that "the smoke spread in various areas".
The Health Minister also said that patients who "were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit and also in the adults" have already been transferred and "patients from intermediate care and palliative care have already been identified for a more differentiated response".
The fire, whose first alert was given at 09:40 local time (10:40 in Lisbon), is circumscribed at 15:00 local time.
