On Monday, the Ponta Delgada Fire Department issued a statement about the fire that ravaged the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES) in the Azorean capital on Saturday.
"May 4, 2024, in addition to being 'International Firefighters' Day', indelibly marked the history of this Fire Department, which this year celebrates 145 years of existence", the corporation begins by saying in a statement.
The Directorate and Command of this fire department clarify that "the nine firefighters assisted due to heat stroke, smoke inhalation poisoning, exhaustion and other minor injuries were not hospitalized"
In fact, "most of them" returned "on the same day, voluntarily, to the scene of operations, to continue their rescue mission, along with their other comrades".
In the same information note, the Azorean firefighters emphasize that "from the operational staff assigned to the evacuation of the HDES, to all those involved in fighting the fire, there was high professionalism, dedication, commitment and total dedication, in order to avoid any tragedy of greater dimensions than the reality itself imposed".
On Sunday, the Government of the Azores declared a state of public calamity due to the fire at the hospital in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, and the regional secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, said that the health unit had already been the target of two inspections, but there is still no forecast for resuming the normal functioning of the equipment.
At the time of the fire, there were 333 patients in the health establishment and it was necessary to transfer 240, according to the head of the Health Department in the Azores.
The most critical and serious patients were transferred to the CUF hospital in Lagoa, and the rest to health centers.
In addition to the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, there are two hospitals in the Azores, on the islands of Terceira (in Angra do Heroísmo) and Faial (in Horta), to which more than 50 patients were transferred.
