The young man, who is in preventive detention at the Leiria Prison Establishment, began to be tried this morning in the Sintra court, in the district of Lisbon, for the crimes of qualified homicide, qualified offense to physical integrity and possession of a prohibited weapon, according to the indictment to which Lusa had access.

The crimes occurred in July 2023 at the residence of the defendant's father, in the municipality of Amadora (district of Lisbon) and according to the accusation, they took place after an argument, which also involved the young man's brother, because of water and gas expenses of a bath.

Following this argument, and after arming himself with a kitchen knife (19 centimeters), the young man allegedly struck several blows on his father, who would later die, and on his younger brother (14 years old), who was left with injuries to his upper limbs.

The defendant's father was still transported alive to the Amadora-Sintra Hospital, where he would remain hospitalized for nine days, dying from "acute respiratory distress syndrome", as a result of the injuries caused by the knife.

Confronted with these accusations, the young man alleged to the panel of judges of the Sintra court that he acted in self-defense, since his father had "tried to attack him with a baseball bat", according to what this defendant's lawyer, Pedro Marvão, told Lusa.

"The father tried to attack him with a baseball bat. He hit him several times and he feared for his life and for the life of his girlfriend, who was pregnant. This situation was corroborated by his brother", pointed out the defender.

Regarding the attacks that were made on his younger brother, the defendant explained that they were made "with the intention of keeping him away", because he went to the aid of his father.

"I hope that the court can consider the self-defense thesis. He is currently regretful", stressed Pedro Marvão.

The continuation of this trial is scheduled for May 21, at 09:15 am.
