Order of Nurses advocates corrections at Ponta Delgada hospital

The intervention that will be carried out at the Ponta Delgada hospital, following Saturday's fire, should be used to correct what "was wrong" in the face of the "disinvestment of the past", defended today the head of the Order of Nurses in the Azores.

"We have here the great opportunity to correct everything that has been going on for several years now", said Rui Soares, in statements to the Lusa agency, following the fire that broke out on Saturday at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES), in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel.

The fire, which broke out at 9:40 am local time on Saturday (10:40 am in Lisbon) and was only declared extinguished at 4:11 pm, forced the transfer of all patients who were hospitalised.

Some patients were transferred from the HDES to Madeira, being admitted to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital and to the Garrison Regiment (RG) No. 3, in Funchal, said on Monday the clinical director of the hospital unit, Júlio Nóbrega.

Recalling that the Order of Nurses has been "warning for several years about the great disinvestment that there was in terms of infrastructure in the region", Rui Soares pointed to the HDES as an example of this lack of investment.

Now, and taking into account that the hospital in Ponta Delgada "is the reference hospital for the Azores", Rui Soares stressed that "it is effectively urgent to recover all areas as quickly as possible".

Regarding the response given following the fire, the official said he was "relatively satisfied", noting that "it was possible to initially guarantee care to the population that was hospitalised" and praising the way in which the employees of the Regional Health Service are "responding very well".

Rui Soares warned, however, that it is necessary to be aware that the recovery of the HDES "will not happen overnight".

In the meantime, following the fire at the HDES and the declaration of a public calamity by the Regional Government, the Union of Portuguese Nurses (Sep-Açores) suspended, on the island of São Miguel, the strike decreed for Friday, in the morning and afternoon shifts.

The Government of the Azores appealed, in turn, for emergency situations to call 112 and that, before any displacement, first contact the Linha Saúde Açores for advice (808 24 60 24).

The basic emergency units in Ribeira Grande, Vila Franca do Campo, Povoação and Nordeste are open 24 hours a day.
