The Road Safety Campaign 'At the wheel, the mobile phone can wait' has been running since Monday. But do you know the consequences and risks of handling a mobile phone while driving?
In a note published on the social network Facebook, the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP) guarantee that, "in addition to putting your life and the lives of others at risk", you run the risk of being fined an amount that can range from 250 to 1250 euros.
You can also be banned from driving for a period of one to 12 months and you run the risk of losing three points on your driving license.
The campaign launched by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and the PSP runs from May 7 to 13 and "aims to alert drivers to the negative and even fatal consequences of improper use of the mobile phone while driving", according to the forces in a joint statement.
The campaign will include awareness-raising actions by ANSR in mainland Portugal and by the services of the regional administrations of the Azores and Madeira and inspection operations by the GNR and the PSP, with special focus on roads and accesses with high road traffic.
The awareness-raising actions will take place simultaneously with inspection operations. You can find out here in which locations and at what times the GNR and the PSP will be inspecting the use of mobile phones.
It should be recalled that the police forces also emphasize that, at 50 km/h, looking at the mobile phone for three seconds is the same as driving a distance of 42 meters with your eyes closed - the equivalent of a line of 10 cars.
