Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, son of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, left the leadership of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in São Paulo in April, allegedly for professional reasons, after holding a meeting with the body's counselors.

The news was reported this Thursday by CNN Portugal and corroborated by the institution itself, which reported the inauguration of the new president, Karene Vilela, through Linkedin.

"As of last April, Karene Vilela took office as the new president of the Portuguese Chamber, thus becoming the first woman president of the institution," it is stated.

Until then, the person in charge held the position of vice-president and president of the Women Entrepreneurs and Culture Committee, having carried out "several successful actions and events".

Although Nuno Rebelo de Sousa still appears as president on the entity's website, Vilela took office on April 25, after the now former president submitted his resignation on April 18, allegedly for professional reasons.

Nuno Rebelo de Sousa left office in the same month that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confessed to having cut ties with his son, following the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins with spinal muscular atrophy who were treated with Zolgensma, a drug that costs more than two million euros, at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon.

"It is unforgivable, because he knows that I have a public and political position, and I pay for it. There are worse things in life. I don't know if he will be held accountable, I don't care," the Head of State is said to have said in a conversation with foreign journalists, referring to his son's alleged involvement in the plot, according to Correio Braziliense.

It should be recalled that the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who acquired Portuguese nationality and received the drug Zolgensma in Portugal, in 2020, costing four million euros, was disclosed by TVI, in early November 2023, and is being investigated by the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

The suspicions of favoritism arose from an email message sent by Nuno Rebelo de Sousa to his father, talking about the matter.
