"The families were relocated to the youth hostels in Funchal and Calheta [west zone of Madeira] and also to the Associação Protetora dos Pobres", said a source from the Regional Secretariat, clarifying that the 32 people are "adults and with mobility".

The fire broke out around 1:15 pm in a building on Rua das Mercês, near Largo da Saúde, in the centre of Funchal, and mobilised around 20 elements from the two fire brigades of the city -- the Firefighters and the Madeiran Volunteers -- with no record of injuries.

"It was an old building, with partition walls, and the firefighters found fire outbreaks between walls, which required a firefighting work with more water", explained to the Lusa agency the councilman Bruno Pereira, who oversees the municipal Civil Protection, referring that the building was partially destroyed.

The official said that in the next few days an assessment will be made of the building's habitability conditions.
