In a statement, Secil recalls that this is the second time in the history of this award, considered the most important Portuguese architecture award, that two projects are selected simultaneously.

The jury recognized the "innovation in the public domain" of Portas do Mar (Campo das Cebolas project) and the "contribution to the regeneration of abandoned territories, promoting a sustainable future" of Casa do Quintal, in Lamarosa.

This is the second time that João Luís Carrilho da Graça receives the Cecil Award. The architect had already won this award in 1994, with the project for the Higher School of Social Communication, in Lisbon.

Miguel Marcelino received the Secil Universities Architecture Award in 2005, with the project for the Beato Swimming Pools, in Lisbon.

The Portas do Mar project, completed in 2018, requalifies "a public urban space full of life", proposing various uses, refers the note released today, recalling that the jury highlighted "the informality and dexterity with which the platform of stay is inclined, protecting it from the Infante Dom Henrique avenue and opening it to the river".

It also refers to the way in which "the remnants of what was found are incorporated as an active part of the project".

Portas do Mar has the landscape architecture of Victor Beiramar Diniz.

Regarding Casa do Quintal, the jury states that "in its small scale, it is a breath of fresh air in its apparent banality, in which each gesture, with deep attention to detail, responds with enormous simplicity to a specific purpose".

"It is also a testimony of how one can care and reuse, in an unpretentious and ingenious version -- low-tech -- accessible to all", it adds.

The Secil Architecture Award is organized jointly by Secil -- Companhia Geral de Cal e Cimento, SA and the Order of Architects.
