In the view of the leader of the liberals, those political forces "do not want the Portuguese to have the necessary knowledge, to know the proposals, to know the people, and to be able to feel represented".

Liberal Initiative (IL) president Rui Rocha accused both the Socialist Party (PS) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of carrying out an “attack on democracy” by rejecting the debate model proposed by RTP, SIC and TVI for the European elections on June 9.
“We learned yesterday that the PSD and the PS are trying to prevent debates for the European elections with the participation of all parties. I would say that this is an attack on democracy. In fact, yesterday we had two attacks on democracy, one regarding the decision of the compensation circle, which was evaluated in the Assembly of the Republic”, the official began by saying, this Saturday, in statements to the press.
In the view of the leader of the liberals, those political forces “do not want the Portuguese to have the necessary knowledge, to know the proposals, to know the people, and to feel represented”.
“In the case of the debates, I believe that there is an obvious attempt, because no one believes that the debates are not held because this harms the street campaign. Obviously, the debates are very important, they reach hundreds of thousands of people, they clarify the Portuguese”, he reiterated.
The official went further, having considered that those groups intend to “try to hide the candidates of other political forces, namely the IL”, a measure that, in the case of the far-right party Chega, would be beneficial, in the view of Rui Rocha.
“We also have Chega, who will certainly complain about this issue, but has an interest in keeping his candidate hidden, because he has sympathy for Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia”, he said.
It should be noted that, according to Expresso, the PS and the PSD rejected the proposal of the television channels to hold 28 debates with a model similar to that of the Legislative elections, on Friday, because they considered that the calendar presented is incompatible with the pre-campaign street agenda.
Even so, they suggested that an alternative proposal be presented with a new calendar, in order to combine the campaign and the editorial criteria, by limiting the number of debates.
