The parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party (PS), Alexandra Leitão, accused the Government this Wednesday of putting "Portugal's prestige at risk". The socialist was referring to the statements made by the Minister of Finance, Miranda Sarmento, who "keeps changing his mind about the size of what he claims to be a deficit, a problem with public accounts". "He does not provide any basis, he does not explain and much of what he says has already been dismantled", she argued.

"This puts Portugal's prestige at risk. Something that was achieved by Portugal and the Portuguese in terms of the international credibility of Portuguese public accounts. This is very serious, it discredits the country", said Alexandra Leitão in statements to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic (AR).

According to the deputy, Miranda Sarmento should explain "which expenses he would stop making". "Would he stop buying vaccines? Would he stop supporting Ukraine? Would he stop supporting farmers?", Alexandra Leitão gave as examples.

"You can't play with the country's prestige", stressed Alexandra Leitão.

The parliamentary leader also said that the PS will file a request to hear the "Mr. Minister of Finance". "We are naturally using the parliamentary instruments that we have at our disposal so that, naturally, the Government can come and clarify the facts on which it bases its decisions, whether in terms of dismissals or in terms of public accounts which, in our opinion, have no basis whatsoever", said Alexandra Leitão.

Regarding the dismissals made by the Government, Leitão said that "statements are made without any basis, without any facts to support them". "The Prime Minister comes and says that when a new Government comes in, it has the right to change people in order to reflect its own policies, I don't know what to make of that", she stressed.

Alexandra Leitão also raised the question of whether the dismissals have been made "to introduce new political orientations", or because "there are serious matters here", as other members of the Government have said.
