The social democrats, in a press release following the Regional Council, consider that "it is not acceptable that this critical moment should serve for political opportunism, as some have tried to do".
The fire, which broke out on 4 May at the Ponta Delgada hospital at 9:40 local time (10:40 in Lisbon) and was only declared extinguished at 16:11, forced the transfer of all patients who were hospitalised to various locations in the Azores, Madeira and the mainland.
At the time of the fire, there were 333 patients in the health establishment and 240 had to be transferred.
"This is a moment that demands a sense of responsibility, with a view to finding the best solutions for the Regional Health Service and always putting the supreme interests of the Azoreans first," said the PSD/Azores body.
The Regional Council expressed "gratitude to the people and entities involved in the response to the fire that occurred at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada, highlighting the professionalism and generosity of all, and welcoming the effective and serene performance of the President of the Government and the Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security".
The party body also expressed "indignation at the seventh place given to the Azores candidate" on the national list of the AD -- Democratic Alliance for the European elections of 9 June, "considering the size that the region gives to Portugal and the quality of the candidate presented".
Regarding the 50th anniversary of the PSD/Azores, the Regional Council greeted "all the generations that helped build what is the founding party of autonomy", paying a "word of recognition and gratitude to the founding fathers of the PSD/Azores and of autonomy".
