The leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, reacted to the agreement reached on the matter of recovering teachers' service time, highlighting the desire "for schools to find peace".

"What I hope is that, having reached this point in the negotiations, schools will find peace and that this matter will no longer be used as a focus of tension in schools", he said, in statements to journalists, quoted by SIC Notícias.

In the view of the leader of the IL, "the country is making an effort to resolve a problem that has been dragging on for a decade" and "when an allocation is made, however fair it may be, it implies an effort on the part of Portuguese taxpayers, in order to meet the aspirations of teachers".

And he continued: "I believe that it is necessary to reach a situation of understanding, in view of this effort that families will be called upon to make".

Rui Rocha also suggests that, once this proposal has been made, "it is time to take a step forward and talk about the problems of public schools, the aspirations of families, the problems of students". "Little has been said about this", he said.

"Families must come first, learning must come first. It seems to me that the conditions are in place for this to happen and that, if certain sectors persist in bringing conflict to schools after this proposal, it will be misunderstood by families", concluded the liberal.

It should be recalled that the agreement on the recovery of teachers' service time was signed by seven of the 12 trade union structures. Fenprof was left out, and was accused by the Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, of never having been "part of the solution".

According to the Government, "the terms of the agreement accelerate the recovery of service time, providing for it to occur at a rate of 25% per year. The reinstatement begins on 1 September 2024 and in 2025, 2026 and 2027 it takes effect on 1 July. The reinstatement will be completed after 2 years and 10 months".

The ministry headed by Fernando Alexandre also explained that "the agreement recognises for teachers the service time counted through Decree-Law no. 74/2023, the so-called career accelerator, ensuring that there are no situations of duplication of benefits in the recovery of service time".
