PS "had a poor result" in Madeira and JPP "capitalized" on it
Alexandra Leitão admits that the regional election results fell short of the socialists' ambitions. However, she also does not rule out the possibility that, if the PSD goes ahead with a minority government in Madeira, it "will not last long".

"It is obviously a weak result for the PS, but the truth is that we have a very specific party – JPP – that does not have any clear ideological matrix and is the one that capitalized the most from the PS's decline, since it went from five to nine deputies, from 11% to almost 17%", she argues.
Alexandra Leitão recognizes the PSD's victory, but fears that the archipelago will go to elections again soon. "In Madeira, as in any democracy, it is up to the party that wins to find solutions and, therefore, first and foremost, it is up to the PSD to find solutions. It is also true that we cannot rule out the possibility that, being a minority government, it will not last long", she stresses, highlighting the "enormous fragmentation" that has been felt throughout the last elections.
"There was enormous fragmentation, which has been a reality in the last elections. In the Azores, in Madeira, at a national level. Here a clear victory for the PSD, but much shorter than all the ones it has had until now in Madeira. Let's not forget that the PSD has governed Madeira since the beginning of democracy, since 76, and that this fragmentation will create a problem of governability, especially if we take into account that the program needs to be approved", she predicts.
It should be recalled that the PSD won the Madeira regional elections yesterday but without a majority. It is followed by the PS and JPP, the third political force in the region. It should be noted that the Left Bloc (BE) and the CDU no longer have representation in the Legislative Assembly.
