According to the request submitted to the parliamentary inquiry committee, and to which Lusa had access, the IL requested the hearing of 18 personalities.

The party intends to hear Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, his son, Nuno, in addition to the head of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo, and the advisor to the head of state for social affairs, Maria João Ruela.

The IL, which is represented on the committee by Joana Cordeiro, also wants to hear the chief of staff of former prime minister António Costa, the former secretary of state for Portuguese communities Berta Nunes and the former president of the board of directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (CHULN) and current minister of health, Ana Paula Martins.

The liberals also request the hearings of Cláudia Monteiro, chief of staff of Lacerda Sales, and Carla Silva, former secretary of the former secretary of health.

Also called to be heard are the former president of CHULN Daniel Ferro, the former clinical director of CHULN Luís Pinheiro, the director of the Department of Pediatrics of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte, Ana Isabel Lopes, the neuropediatrician of the Hospital de Santa Maria Teresa Moreno, the director of the Neuropediatric Service of the Hospital de Santa Maria, António Levy Gomes, as well as the Inspector-General of Health Activities, António Carlos Caeiro Carapeto, and the president of Infarmed, Rui Santos Ivo.

The IL also makes more than 20 requests for documentation, highlighting the audit report of the Hospital de Santa Maria, the IGAS report, opinions of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee of the Hospital de Santa Maria, minutes of the Board of Directors of the Hospital de Santa Maria, between September 2019 and July 2020, communications between families and the various entities and communications between the Presidency of the Republic or the Civil House and the Government.

The parliamentary inquiry committee will meet on Wednesday to, among other things, appoint the rapporteur, consider and vote on the draft regulation, consider and vote on the time grid and establish the methodology of operation.

At issue is the treatment, in 2020, of two twins residing in Brazil who acquired Portuguese nationality, with the drug Zolgensma. With a total cost of four million euros (two million euros per person), this drug aims to control the spread of spinal muscular atrophy, a neurodegenerative disease.

The case was reported by TVI last November and is still being investigated by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) and IGAS has already concluded that access to the neuropediatric consultation of these children was illegal.

An internal audit of the Hospital Santa Maria also concluded that the scheduling of a first hospital consultation by the Secretary of State for Health was the only exception to compliance with the rules in this case.
