Rovanperä wants to return for final day despite crash

Finnish driver Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota) hopes to return this Sunday for the last day of the Portugal rally, despite the accident he had this morning, in Montim, in the 11th special stage, which forced him to retire today from the competition.

"I think the car is okay and, unless there's anything special, I think it will be okay to go tomorrow [Sunday]. I know it's not going to be easy from the starting position, I'll be cleaning the tracks, but we're here to help the team and we're going to try to bring in as many points as possible", said the winner of the last two editions of the race.

The young Nordic driver can return to the race in 'super rally' condition, and despite no longer having ambitions for the overall classification, he can still score points in the final stage this Sunday, in Fafe, and provide a show for the public.

"Portuguese fans are amazing. It's great to feel their support. The atmosphere on the stages is fantastic", he added.

Kalle Rovanperä admitted a mistake in braking that caused the accident this morning, and confessed his disappointment at not being able to defend his two-time champion title in the race.

"It was a pity, because the morning went well for us. But then, I missed the braking on a straight and we ended up going off the road in a part that was even simple. There was some confusion in a previous sequence of curves, and at these speeds you can't make mistakes and maybe that affected my braking", he added.

The Finn was leading the Rally of Portugal, and had even won the first special stage of the day today. With his withdrawal, the first classified is now his teammate Sebástien Ogier.

"It was a good morning for us. We thought we could be faster, and we pushed the pace a little without taking big risks. The floors were good on the first runs, and although we don't know how they will be this afternoon, maybe the surprises have not yet arrived. You have to stay fully focused", added the French driver.
