Aleix Espargaro will retire at the end of this season. The 34-year-old Spanish rider will bring the curtain down on his career when the 2024 World Championship concludes.
The announcement was made at a press conference ahead of the Catalunya Grand Prix, which takes place at the Circuit de Barcelona.
"My body tells me that I'm still competitive, that I can fight with my colleagues on the grid, but my heart tells me that I need to spend more time with my family and stop," he said.
"I have to be honest with myself. Before, I only wanted to fly to the races, now the focus is different. I really like spending time at home, in my life, with my children... And if you're not 100% focused on this sport, it's difficult to be at the top," he added.
As such, it is already known that a place at the factory Aprilia will be vacant next season. Good news for Miguel Oliveira, who now aspires to the vacancy left by Espargaro. It should be remembered that the other Aprilia rider is Maverick Viñales.
At this time, Aleix Espargaro has 242 Grands Prix in the top category of motorcycling, having achieved three victories, 11 podiums and five pole positions.
