"On May 1st, International Workers' Day, the workers of commerce, offices and services of Portugal will be fighting for more salary, less working hours, career and profession valorization, and against precariousness", indicated, in a statement, CESP - Trade Union of Commerce, Office and Service Workers of Portugal, affiliated with CGTP.

According to the union structure, these workers have "intense and unregulated working hours", working up to 18 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.

For the union, commerce must close on all national holidays, as well as on Sundays, and from 10:00 pm.

The workers also demand the reduction of working hours to 35 hours per week.

"The salaries and careers of commerce workers cannot continue to lose purchasing power -- we demand the end of professional stagnation, and the salary update of collective labor agreements without loss of rights", he stressed.

The Union of Service Sector Workers (Sitese), which belongs to UGT, also announced today the strike of commerce, office and service workers, namely of companies affiliated with the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies (APED), between 00:00 and 24:00 on May 1st.

The sector demands respect for International Workers' Day and contests the precariousness of bonds and schedules.

The workers also demand salary increases and respect for collective bargaining.

The union structure also accused APED of not wanting to sit at the negotiating table "in an honest way and with the intention of reviewing working conditions in the sector".

For Sitese, APED's posture reveals that working conditions "do not cause them any concern and workers cannot remain indifferent to this".

Lusa contacted APED and is awaiting a response.
