The CTT is located in the district of Inhassoro, province of Inhambane, and according to the state power company, will produce 450 MegaWatts (MW) of electricity using the natural gas reserves of Pande and Temane, for a period of 25 years, increasing by "about 16% the installed capacity for electricity production in the country".

According to the source, the aim is to guarantee access to electricity to over 1.5 million families by 2030, within the scope of the government's universal access to energy program, and also contribute to boosting national industrialization, as well as consolidating Mozambique's position as a regional energy hub in the Southern African region.

The construction of the project started in March 2022, including a transmission line to the province of Maputo, with a length of 563 kilometers, and budgeted at over 400 million dollars (373 million euros).

The CTT is budgeted at 650 million dollars (over 606 million euros) according to data from Globeleq, a multinational with a majority stake in the infrastructure.

In addition to natural gas, the project will reuse the steam generated by this resource also for the production of an additional amount of electricity, which will be supplied to EDM for distribution on the domestic market. The surplus will be exported to the southern African region.

The company clarifies that the process of integrating, verifying and testing all the machinery at the plant is scheduled for June, in this case "due to delays by the contractor and the occurrence of tropical storm Filipo, which had a negative impact on the progress of the works".

Storm Filipo hit Mozambique in March.

According to information from EDM, the selection and hiring of professionals who will operate the machines at the CTT is underway, with the company acknowledging a delay in the process.

"All our skills and competence will be put to the test, but we still have the opportunity to make it work and manage the infrastructure responsibly, safeguarding EDM's good name", said Pedro Nguelume, executive administrator for the business development area of EDM, in the face of the challenges in training human resources to respond to the operationalization of the CTT.

In November, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy said that the CTT will produce energy from natural gas supplied by a gas production plant that is being built by the South African multinational Sasol in Inhassoro, over 70 kilometers from Maputo.

"A particular point that we wanted to emphasize about the CTT is that it will produce 450 MW" that will be supplied "to the country and, of course, to other customers", said Carlos Zacarias.
