"It is intolerable that the pain of a missing relative is added to the terrible violence that has already cost the lives of more than a dozen people who are looking for" relatives, said the executive director of AI Mexico, Edith Olivares, in a statement released on Friday.

The NGO participated in the march of the mothers, in which thousands of women from all over the country who are looking for their children and other relatives gathered in the Mexican capital on Friday to demand justice from the Government of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who refused to meet with them.

According to the Mexican National Search Commission (CNB), the country has more than 116,000 missing persons since there are records, but López Obrador said that these numbers were manipulated to increase criticism of the Government.

At least nine mothers, who were looking for missing relatives on their own, were killed in February, last year and in 2022, according to the local press and groups of families of missing persons.

The director of AI Mexico considered that "the State cannot continue to ignore the damage suffered by families searching for relatives", stressing that "many have suffered health problems, lost jobs and, therefore, income".

"For this reason, AI appeals to all authorities to guarantee all the rights of the families of missing persons and (...) fulfil the duty to prevent and investigate disappearances", concluded Olivares.
