Three Portuguese in the finals on the first day of the European Paralympic Swimming Championships

Portuguese swimmers Marco Meneses, with a new national record, and Diogo Cancela secured their place in the finals of the European Paralympic Swimming Championships, which are taking place at the Complexo de Piscinas Olímpicas do Funchal, in Madeira.

In the heats of the 400-meter freestyle S8, Diogo Cancela achieved the third-best time in his series, 4.39.50 minutes, and starts the final scheduled for the afternoon, with the fifth-best mark.

The Portuguese record holder for the distance (4.36.27 minutes), who is missing his left arm, was 3.28 seconds behind the fastest in the heat, the Israeli Mark Malyar (4.36.22).

Tomás Cordeiro obtained the 10th-best time in the heats of the 100-meter breaststroke SB9, swimming in 1.13.16 minutes, and was left out of the final, in which the last to guarantee a presence was the Russian, who competes under a neutral flag, Dmitri Grigoyev (1.12.28).

In Paralympic swimming, swimmers with locomotor disabilities are grouped in the various styles according to their functional capacities, through assessments, namely, of muscular strength, coordination, and limitation of movements.

The class number is preceded by the letter S (Swimming), with classes S1 to S10 grouping swimmers with physical-motor limitations, classes 11 to 13 swimmers with visual impairment, and class S14 is exclusive for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
