"Frederico Varandas' Speech? If I Were Sérgio Conceição..."

Rúben Amorim downplayed this Friday, in the press conference previewing Sporting-Desportivo de Chaves, the fact that Frederico Varandas' 'heated' speech about the Portuguese Cup final against FC Porto had been made public.
"I won't speak for Sérgio Conceição. I would use that to the max to motivate my players. What the president and the players have already responded very well to is that it was a locker room conversation, at a private dinner, where the daughter of a member of a social body recorded without malice," he said.
"There are things we can't control. They'll say we could have been more careful, but we're all a family, we brought everyone together, and the president made a locker room speech. It wasn't in an interview, there was no malice. It was in a private moment. Everyone uses that in the locker room, I don't see anything more than that," he added.
The coach did not hide, however, that he is already looking ahead to the Clássico do Jamor: "I'm not thinking about anything else. And to give back to the fans, with a good performance, to prepare for the Portuguese Cup in the best way. That's the biggest focus.
"Looking at the season, if we don't win the Cup final, it will be less special. It will be a good championship, in which Sporting was champion. If we add the Cup, the team will be remembered in a different way. It will still be remembered for the points and for winning all the games at home, but winning the Cup will make this team more special," he concluded.
