João and Messias, world gold in K2 500 meters in 2023, are undergoing specific preparation with coach Rui Fernandes for the Paris2024 Olympic Games, as is Teresa Portela, who will also be absent from Szeged, from June 13 to 16.

This trio and Fernando Pimenta will come together again at the beginning of June for a five-day national team training camp to adapt to the conditions of the Paris Olympic track.

World champion and multi-medalist Fernando Pimenta will participate in three events, in K1 500, 1,000 and 5,000 meters, the same in which he won gold this weekend at the Poznan World Cup, in Poland, in which most of his greatest international rivals chose not to participate, to focus on Paris.

In the national team, the highlight is still the young K4 500, with the under-23s Iago Bebiano, Pedro Casinha and Gustavo Gonçalves, reinforced by the greater experience of Kevin Santos.

Gustavo and Pedro also join in K2 500 meters, a distance in which they were under-23 World runners-up two years ago and European bronze in 2023, with Pedro Casinha also doing the K1 200, in which he was European gold last season, also in under-23.

This quartet begins the path to Los Angeles2028 where the Portuguese Canoe Federation wants to have this boat again, present in Rio2016 and Tokyo2020, but which did not qualify for Paris.

In paracanoeing, the highlight is Norberto Mourão in VL2, a bronze athlete in Tokyo2020 and who has been a regular podium in major international competitions, accompanied by Alex Santos in KL1, his partner also in the Paris2024 Paralympic Games.
