Oil giants knew about fossil fuel burning effects decades ago
The five largest oil and gas companies knew since "at least" the 1960s that fossil fuels would cause global warming, but persisted in denying it and even manipulated the information.

That conclusion was reached in a report by US lawmakers.
"For more than half a century, the 'Big Oil' companies have deceived the public about their responsibility for the climate crisis, doing everything they could to keep the United States and the world hooked on their products," said the report by a House Select Committee, released Tuesday.
The "Big Oil" companies are the six conglomerates and trade groups that were the focus of the investigation, launched in September 2021: ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP America, Shell, the American Petroleum Institute (API) -- the oil industry's main lobbying arm -- and the US Chamber of Commerce.
"All six entities...obstructed and delayed" the investigation, including by refusing to turn over documents, the 65-page report, titled "Climate Deception: ExxonMobil and the Industry's Long History of Misleading the Public on Climate Change," said.
After initially dismissing climate change as a "hoax" and even denying it was happening, the report said, the industry was forced to "shift its position" as the science "became too overwhelming to deny."
The oil giants then "developed a strategy of deception and disinformation -- backed by an army of professional operatives -- publicly claiming to support climate action while working behind the scenes to block it," the report said.
That included, the lawmakers said, promoting natural gas as a "climate-friendly" alternative and a "bridge fuel" to a fossil-free future.
The report concluded that "it is past time to hold Big Oil accountable for its decades-long campaign of deception and to take action to remedy the damage it has caused."
It's not the first time oil companies have been accused of knowing about the climate impacts of fossil fuels for decades.
In January 2023, a study published in the journal Science revealed that ExxonMobil's own scientists had predicted global warming with remarkable accuracy, in some cases as early as 1977.
