In a press conference after the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Finance clarified that the possibility of a Rectifying Budget was not discussed in today's meeting, having focused on the budgetary situation as of March 31.
"We did not discuss the issue of the Rectifying Budget. It will be subject to assessment and decision in the coming months depending on what the impact of many things may be, which we do not yet know, but which we will come to know in the coming times and may or may not require this instrument", he said.
The Minister of Finance today estimated the deficit registered until the end of the first quarter of this year at around 600 million euros and accused the previous government of having increased spending after the last legislative elections.
"The budgetary situation is much worse than the previous government had announced", declared Joaquim Miranda Sarmento at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting, saying that to the 300 million euros of deficit registered in the last summary of budget execution it is important to add another 300 million euros as a result of the increase in debts to suppliers.
According to the most recent data from the Directorate-General for the Budget (DGO), the State went from a surplus of 1,177 million euros to a deficit of 259 million euros until March, which had not been seen since December 2022.
